It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  I was not sure what I wanted to eat. Because the weather was so warm, I wanted to eat something fresh and refreshing.  I decided to make Ahi Tuna Poke.  Poke is an appetizer that is very popular in Hawaii.  You can find Poke in most America restaurants, especially Japanese and Hawaiian restaurants in America.  Poke is made out of Yellowfin Tuna, Ahi Tuna, or Salmon.  The fish is marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, and lemon.  I topped the poke with furikake.  Furikake is a japanese condiment usually topped on rice.  It is a mixture of dried seaweed and sesame seeds.  I also mixed in 1/2 an avocado.

You can eat Poke by itself or serve with wonton chips.  Wonton chips are just fried wonton wrappers.
This colorful dish is so simple, delicious, and refreshing.

Ivy’s Ahi Poke Recipe:
  • 1 lb of ahi tuna steak (keep in fridge until ready to slice)
  • 2 tablespoons of Soy Sauce (I used the light soy sauce because I am not a fan of the dark salty soy sauce- if it’s too light for you, just add salt- I would use kosher salt or any type of “rock” salt ).
  • 1 Tablespoon of Sesame Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon of Rice Wine Vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon of honey
  • Red chili flakes- if you want spice- put as much according to your taste.
  • black ground pepper- just to season.
  • 2 cloves of garlic= grated
  • 1 tsp of ginger= grated (pop the ginger in the freezer – it’s easier to grate it if it’s frozen).
  • Green onions- (a little bit of the green and all of the white part)- about a palm full.
  • *Furikake (you can find this at an Asian grocery store, you can omit this and just get sesame seeds)
*if you’re using sesame seeds- toast them lightly (you just need enough to garnish on top.
  • ½ an avocado
  • Lemon (I just squirted 1/4 slice of a lemon  – you can omit this.. I like to do this b/c it wakes up the flavors).
  1. Mix soy sauce, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, honey, grated garlic, ginger, and green onions in a bowl.
  2. Wash the tuna steak and cut against the grain.  Put it in the bowl with the soy sauce..etc.
  3. Cover bowl and let it sit in the fridge for an hour or two.
  4. When ready to serve, slice up ½ an avocado in cubes. Mix with the ahi.
  5. Squirt lemon and mix.
  6. Top w/ furikake or sesame seeds.
  7. Serve on top of Wonton wrappers or by itself.  If serving by itself, I would spoon some seaweed on  the bottom of a clear glass champagne flute, and then add the ahi.
